Ferenc Kállai , originally Ferenc Krampner (born October 4, 1925 in Gyoma , † July 11, 2010 in Budapest ), was a Hungarian actor .

Life

Kállai completed an acting training at the Budapest Theater and Film School ( Színművészeti Akadémia ) in 1944 . From 1945 he received engagements at various Budapest theaters, including the Belvárosi Színház Operetta Theater.

In 1948 he was engaged at the National Theater Budapest , where he mainly appeared in classical theater roles. He played a wide repertoire , which included plays by William Shakespeare , Ben Jonson , Molière , Russian authors such as Nikolai Gogol and Maxim Gorki , but also plays from modern times and contemporary theater. For example, he played Shakespeare's Romeo in Romeo and Juliet , Polonius in Hamlet , Gloucester in King Lear , and Sir John Falstaff in Henry IV . In the course of his career he took on the title role in Volpone , Orgon in Tartuffe , Mephisto in Faust , Luka in Nachtasyl , Antón Antónowitsch Skwosník-Dmuchanówskij in The Auditor and Big Daddy in The Cat on the Hot Tin Roof . He has also appeared in plays by George Bernard Shaw ( Mrs. Warren's Trade ), Arthur Miller ( Death of a Salesman ) and Edward Albee ( Delicate Balance ).

From the 1950s on, Kállai also worked for film and television . In the cinema he was one of the "versatile and most busy actors." After his first small role in the film Fehér vonat , he made his official film debut in 1952 in the comedy Elsö fecskék . With Ági Mészáros he played in Girls of Today in 1953 . In 1955, Violetta Ferrari was his partner in the comedy 2 × 2 is sometimes 5 . He played with Nicole Courcel in 1959 in the Hungarian-French co-production La belle et le tzigane . 1964 followed with Terry Torday the television film An Ufern . In 1965 he played on the side of Antal Páger and Andrea Drahota in the horror film The Horror . From the 1950s onwards, Éva Ruttkai was his partner in various films several times.

In 1971 Johannes Schaaf engaged him for his film adaptation of the novel Die Kapuzinergruft , where Kállai played alongside András Bálint , Rosemarie Fendel and Doris Kunstmann . In 1977 he received the “Best Actor” award at the Tehran Film Festival for his role as István Ivicz in the 1976 film Szépek és bolondok . In later years he often took on small character roles, including as the hotel manager in the comedy Der absolut normal Wahnsinn or as an old passenger looking for a toilet in the comedy Üvegtigris .

From 1977 to 1990 Kállai taught at the Budapest Drama Academy ( Színház- és Filmművészeti Egyetem ), from 1987 as a professor .

Kállai has also received several awards for his artistic merits. In 1956 and 1958 he was a Mari Jászai Prize winner. In 1970 he was awarded the title “Outstanding Artist of the Hungarian People's Republic” ( Magyar Köztársaság Kiváló Művésze ). In 1973 he received the Kossuth Prize .

Kallai, whose health had deteriorated increasingly since 2005, had lived in a nursing home since 2009 . He died in a hospital in Budapest as a result of his diabetes .
