Antal Páger

Antal Páger (born January 29, 1899 in Makó , Austria-Hungary , † December 14, 1986 in Budapest , Hungary ) was a Hungarian actor , one of the busiest actors in front of the camera with over 180 films.

Life

Páger, who was interested in music, had briefly studied law in Budapest and joined the theater in 1919 to become an actor. He made his debut in Stuhlweissenburg , followed by engagements in Szeged , Pécs and Oradea (Romania), among others . In 1931 he finally reached Budapest, where he continued his theater career. As a stage artist, Páger was particularly successful in light subjects; he preferred to appear in comedies and operettas (e.g. as Liliom in Franz Molnar 's play of the same name or as Styx in Jacques Offenbach 's ' Orpheus in der Unterwelt ' ). In the last phase of his career (from 1956) Páger also succeeded in staging plays from Damascus. His achievements as Count Karenin in Leo Tolstoy's ' Anna Karenina ' , his Dauphin in George Bernard Shaw's ' Die Heilige Johanna ' , his John Gabriel Borkmann in Henrik Ibsen 's play of the same name, his Prince Bolkonski in Tolstoy's ' War and Peace ' are from this period ' and his father in Tennessee Williams ' ' The Cat on a Hot Tin Roof ' matters.

In 1932 Antal Páger made his screen debut in Pál Fejős ' fisherman's story “Menschen im Sturm”. Since then, cinema has had considerable importance in his career. In Hungary under the Horthy regime, he was mainly involved in cheerful stories, and the actor was occasionally seen in melodramas and romances. In 1944, as a result of the fascist takeover by the Arrow Cross , Antal Páger managed to escape via Austria and France to Argentina . He stayed there until 1956 and earned his living as a painter. Exhibitions took him to Venezuela and Brazil . In Buenos Aires , where Páger received his Argentine citizenship in 1951, he made contact with the theater again. In 1955 he decided to return to Hungary, where he arrived in August 1956, just before the unsuccessful uprising against the communist regime. His career in the Hungarian post-war film brought Antal Páger artistically more demanding tasks than in the period up to 1944. Now he was seen in a number of interesting age roles, "which identified him as a mature character interpreter capable of subtle nuances." He was often seen in Roll type 'little man from the street'. His most important character roles include Dr. Mohai in Zoltán Várkonyis pillar of salt (1958), the Balázs in Márton Keletis Rainy Sunday (1962) and the pastor Tonay in Zoltán Fabris family Toth (1969). In 1963 he played a provincial official in László Ranódy's "The Lark". The film was Hungary's entry into competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964 and Páger was honored ex aequo with Saro Urzì in the “ Best Actor ” category.

Páger was last married to the actress Bea Szilágyi (1908–1987).
