history

Gyoma

The origin of the village name is unknown. Spellings such as Gama (1332), Gyoma (1444), Gyomya (1473) and Gywoma (1479) are documented by written sources. In 1563 135 inhabitants lived here. At the beginning of the 19th century, the village's population and agricultural production increased so much that Gyoma achieved the status of an agricultural town in 1830. It formed the largest parish in the district. Gyoma was a county seat until 1966; it was annexed to Szarvas in the same year.

Endrőd

The existence of this small village is known from a letter of nobility describing Endrőd as belonging to the Endrődy and Verbőczy families. It was written in 1425 Endréd, 1450 Endreed, 1550 Endryd. According to contemporary information, in 1425 it was the residence of 33 noble families.

Gyomaendrőd

Until the merger in 1982 Gyomaendrőd was divided into the two municipalities Gyoma and Endrőd, in 1989 Gyomaendrőd was elevated to a municipality.

When entering the city on the main road No. 46 from Budapest to Gyomaendrőd, you can see long rows of weekend houses in front of the Endrőd Bridge. These houses stand on the banks of two dead branches of the river. These were created with others after the river Körös was regulated and together with the main river form a popular leisure and fishing paradise. The value of this recreational area is increased by the fact that the Körös is one of the cleanest rivers in Hungary.

In the city there is a memorial on Hősök tere (German: Heroes' Square), which commemorates the victims of the First World War and the interwar period. In 1935 there was a salvo of gendarmes in Endrőd; many people were killed in the process. The statue of the monument was created by the sculptor and artist István Kiss . Another memorial was created for the victims of the Second World War, artistically designed by Béla Mladonyiczky . A country house has been set up in Sugár Street.

After crossing the Budapest-Békéscsaba railway line you come to Gyoma. This district is known nationwide for the Kner book printing company. Next to the print shop is the Kner House, designed by Lajos Kozma . The only typographic museum in Hungary is housed here. Szabadság Square is the heart of the city center. Among other things, this is where the bus station is located, from which numerous regional and intercity buses depart. A stately city palace, which today serves as a medical ordination, gives the square a special atmosphere. Also on Szabadság Square is the famous hotel and restaurant "Körös" and the town house. The latter was built in the classical style . The Reformed Church is now a monument, it was built in the so-called plait style. At Hősök Street 43 is the Kner-Imre-Gymnasium, designed by Miklós Ybl in the Transylvanian-Hungarian style. The Catholic Church was built in 1878 according to plans by the architect Alajos Hauszmann in neo-Romanesque style . The first Catholic church at the entrance to the city, designed in plait style, has been a monument since 1804.

From the center of the city you can take the Kőrös river promenade to the Erzsébet-Au (German: Elisabethen-Aue). This is where the city's thermal baths are located, whose 62 ° C water was declared medicinal water in 1960. The use of this thermal water is indicated for chronic diseases of the locomotor organs and for the treatment of gynecological and other problems. Stomach problems can be cured by drinking slightly cooled healing water from the thermal baths.

Along the river Kőrös, a promenade for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders as well as moorings for special water tours have been established over a length of 26 kilometers. The city of Gyomaendröd experiences a large number of visitors on the occasion of the many tourist events. The program includes, for example, a motocross race and a Volkswagen meeting, the "International Cheese and Quark Festival" and, as part of the St. Stephen's Days, the state fish cooking competition.
