action

During a visit to his childhood friend, Count Karnejew, the cynical examining magistrate Kamyshev met the beautiful Olenka, a girl from the people who looked after the children of the widowed land manager Urbenin. The girl marries the old Urbenin without being able to love him. Kamyshov, on the other hand, desires the beautiful woman and enters into a love affair with her. When he found out that Olenka is also giving her favor to the count, the haughty man, who cares so little about the sense of honor of others, is deeply offended in his pride. He kills Olenka during a hunting event with the knife that the Count gave her. However, the suspicion falls on the jealous Urbenin, who is also arrested, convicted and imprisoned. Kamyshov, on the other hand, uses his freedom to write a novel about the story of his life.

criticism

The Evangelische Film-Beobachter sums up his opinion as follows: “Dramatization of the novel of the same name by Anton Chekhov, in which, using the example of a criminal case, the decay of large bourgeois society at the end of the 19th century is depicted in an unpathetic but pointed and precise manner. The careful staging and excellent actors do justice to the intentions of the original. Recommended for adults. "
