Gerhard Klingenberg , actually Gerhard Schwabenitzky (born May 11, 1929 in Vienna ) is an Austrian actor , director and artistic director .

Life

Klingenberg took acting and directing classes at the Vienna Conservatory . From 1948 he received his first engagements at theaters in St. Pölten , Klagenfurt and Innsbruck before joining the Berliner Ensemble in 1956 . From 1962 to 1968 he worked at theaters in Cologne , Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg as well as at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus , the Schauspielhaus Zürich and the Münchner Kammerspiele .

From 1968 he worked as a director at the Vienna Burgtheater , where he was director from 1971 to 1976. One of Klingenberg's special merits at the Burgtheater was that he brought the then European avant-garde directors to Vienna. Among others, the directors Claus Peymann , Giorgio Strehler , Peter Hall , Luca Ronconi , Jean-Louis Barrault , Roberto Guicciardini and Otomar Krejča staged under his direction .

Following his management in Vienna, Klingenberg returned to the Schauspielhaus Zurich as director from 1977 to 1982 and was then director of the Berlin Renaissance Theater from 1986 to 1995 . After his work in Berlin he worked as a freelance director. In addition to his work at the theater, Klingenberg has worked on numerous television productions as an actor, director and screenwriter and also worked as a Shakespeare translator.

Klingenberg is the father of the director Reinhard Schwabenitzky .
