Peter von Braun

Peter Andreas Gottlieb Franz Braun (from 1795 Freiherr von ; baptized July 2, 1758 in Vienna ; † November 15, 1819 ibid) was an industrialist and theater director in Vienna. He entered the civil service in 1777 as the son of Hofrat Johann Gottlieb Braun and became court secretary. As a stewardess he was very high in the social hierarchy.

In 1789 he founded a silk fabric factory for which he sent workers from Lyon. In 1790 he established himself as a wholesaler, but then turned to cultural activities; From 1794–1807 he was the leading director of both court theaters , today's Burgtheater and the Theater an der Wien . Under his direction, Beethoven's only opera Fidelio was premiered in the Theater an der Wien in 1806 and withdrawn after only two performances. As a court banker (from 1796) he developed into a patron of art and science.

From 1796 to 1817 Baron von Braun was the owner of Schönau Castle on the Triesting. He had the then extraordinary Temple of the Night built in the palace gardens.
