Martin Kušej (born May 14, 1961 in Wolfsberg , Carinthia ) is an Austrian theater director , opera director and artistic director .

Life

Kušej was born the son of a farmer and belongs to the minority of the Carinthian Slovenes . From 1978 to 1982 he studied sports science , German language and literature at the University of Graz . From 1982 to 1985 he studied directing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz . After completing his studies, he assisted at the Salzburg State Theater and the Slovenian National Theater in Ljubljana . In 1987 he directed It by Karl Schönherr at the Schauspielhaus Graz . In 1990 he founded the group My friend Martin together with the set designer Martin Zehetgruber . From 1993 to 2000 he was in-house director at the Staatstheater Stuttgart . From 2004 to 2006 he was acting director of the Salzburg Festival . He has staged at the Deutsches Theater Berlin , the State Opera Berlin , the Volksbühne Berlin , the Graz Opera , the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Burgtheater Vienna and the Zurich Opera House .

Kušej has received numerous awards. In 1999, 2001 and 2009 he was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen . In 1993 he received the Kurt Huebner Directing Award from the German Academy of Performing Arts . In 1999 he was awarded the 3sat innovation prize. In 2006 and 2009 he received the Vienna Theater Prize NESTROY . In 2012 he was awarded the DER FAUST German Theater Prize.

He is a member of the German Academy of Performing Arts . In 2011 Kušej became director of the Bavarian State Theater in Munich. In May 2013 Kušej was also appointed professor of directing at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna (Institute for Drama and Drama Directing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna ) from October 2013. Kušej succeeds Michael Gruner , who will retire at the end of the semester. In September 2019 he was succeeded by Andreas Beck as artistic director of the Munich Residenztheater .

In June 2017, Kušej was appointed director of the Burgtheater Vienna from the 2019/20 season . He therefore ended his contract with the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel, which ran until 2020, early in 2019 in order to start there from the 2019/20 season.
