Roland Schimmelpfennig

Roland Schimmelpfennig (born September 19, 1967 in Göttingen ) is a German writer and dramaturge.
Schimmelpfennig is currently the most performed contemporary dramatist in Germany. His pieces are performed in over 40 countries. Schimmelpfennig, who also works as a director, is not a representative of post-dramatic theater, but stands in the tradition of literary drama: For him, the literary text remains the starting point and central point of reference for the staging of his plays. Schimmelpfennig's pieces are dramaturgically among the most advanced of the present, for example, they dispense with fixed assignments of roles and actors, are mostly structured in a collage-like manner, and regularly contain surreal or fantastic moments. Schimmelpfennig has developed his own form of narrative theater, in which characters constantly exceed their roles in order - addressed to the audience - to describe themselves or to report on themselves. The viewer is constantly distanced from the game, while at the same time Schimmelpfennig gives him the opportunity to participate emotionally in what is being portrayed.
Life
Roland Schimmelpfennig was born in Göttingen and worked as a journalist in Istanbul after graduating from high school. In 1990 he began training as a director at the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich. After graduating, he became an assistant director and later a member of the artistic management team at the Münchner Kammerspiele . He also worked at the Berlin Schaubühne , the Vienna Burgtheater and the Deutsches Theater Berlin . In the winter semester 2012/13 Schimmelpfennig took on the 2nd Saarbrücken poetry lectureship for drama at the Saarland University , during which he explained his concept of theater in three public lectures in January 2013.
In 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2009 his new piece was invited to the Mülheimer Theatertage .
He is a member of the PEN Center Germany .
