Life

After studying at the drama school in Bochum and the drama school in Berlin , Adler worked from 1969 to 1971 as an assistant director at Südwestfunk Baden-Baden . Since 1971 he has been a freelance writer and director for radio plays and theater . In total, he has staged over two hundred radio plays. Adler also worked at the Schauspiel Frankfurt, Schauspielhaus Köln and the Staatstheater Karlsruhe.

For his radio play Centropolis (1976) he received the radio play award of the war blind . The radio plays Breakfast Talks in Miami (1978) and Oops, wrong planet! (2012) were also awarded the War Blind Radio Play Prize. His radio play Richthofen, produced in 1979, based on a text by Gert Hofmann , denounced the gun-obsession of the fighter pilot and his time in a sparse and absurd production. The role of Manfred von Richthofen sponsor, President Paul von Hindenburg , was spoken by a woman, the comradely laughter of the military was moderated ("comradely laughing"), the sounds of the planes and the wind were sung by the actors in the studio.

In 1995 Adler began to break new ground with more extensive productions and staged Walter Kempowski's documentary The War Is Ending with over 200 speakers for a 14-hour broadcast . His largest project Otherland , after Tad Williams ' tetralogy of the same name, is 24 hours long and was realized between January 19, 2004 and September 9, 2005 with over 250 actors at Hessischer Rundfunk (HR) in Frankfurt. It is the most extensive German-language radio play production to date. Between 2006 and 2007, another major project was developed under Adler's direction at WDR: Karl May 's ' Orient Cycle ' as a 12-hour radio play. In 2010 he produced in Stuttgart for the SWR and HR House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende in six parts and a total length of nine hours. In 2013 he wrote and staged a radio crime scene for SWR .

Walter Adler is a member of the German Academy of Performing Arts and lives in Cologne.
