Drama School Bochum is the institutionalized name for the courses in acting and directing on the Bochum campus of the Folkwang University of the Arts .

history

The training facility was founded in 1939 as the Westphalian Drama School in Bochum by Saladin Schmitt , the director of the Bochum theater at the time . The facility was sponsored by the city ​​of Bochum . Until the 1970s, the theater's directors were also the artistic directors of the school. In 2000, the drama school became the sole sponsor of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and, as a Bochum location, was attached to the Essen Folkwang Academy of Music , today's Folkwang University of the Arts .

In 2009, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia bought the former Thürmer-Saal and the adjacent buildings of the former Ferd in the Ehrenfeld district of Bochum's Wiemelhausen district . Thürmer Pianofortefabrik , within walking distance of the theater and downtown Bochum. They were expanded into the new campus of the Folkwang Theater Center for 7.5 million euros by 2014. With the Great Hall and the Black Box studio stage , the center has two venues, as well as rehearsal rooms as well as seminar and meeting rooms.

Education

The training period for the drama course is 8 semesters, with the first 4 semesters comprising basic training that focuses on the discovery and development of the theatrical instrument. The course was modularized for the 2009 summer semester in accordance with the Bologna Agreement and assessed using the European credit system. The Artium Diploma is equivalent to a Master’s degree with 300 ECTS .

As part of the traditionally close ties to the Schauspielhaus Bochum, students in their third year of study each year have the opportunity to take part in a production by the Schauspielhaus. The final year students are also given a supervised internship in various German-speaking theaters. In cooperation with the WDR , courses lasting several weeks for camera presentations are also offered on a regular basis.

Every summer, the second year drama students perform in the Weitmar Castle Park . Traditionally , a play or scenes from Shakespeare are shown around the New Year's Eve chapel . Entry is free and the event is very popular.

The Folkwang University of the Arts , with its Acting Bochum course, is a member institute of the "Standing Conference Acting Education" (SKS) .
