The Thalia Theater Halle (Saale) was founded on October 11, 1952 as the “Theater of the Young Guard”. It has had its current name since 1990. Since 1977 it has hosted the workshop days for children's and youth theaters . From 2001, under the new management of Annegret Hahn , the stage made greater efforts to touch the reality of the people in the region with its productions. The "Hotel Neustadt" project attracted nationwide attention in 2003, in which young people temporarily converted an empty high-rise building into a hotel with a theater festival as part of a project.

Until the summer of 2012, the theater's venue was a building on Kardinal-Albrecht-Straße, which was previously used by the Lodge at the Five Towers at the Salzquell . In October 2010 it was decided to close the house at the end of the 2010/11 season. As of April 2011, the employees of the Theater Oper und Orchester GmbH, to which the Thalia Theater has belonged since 2009, will be waiving part of their salary in a company wage agreement. This means that the decision to close the Thalia Theater is no longer valid.

In March 2012, the supervisory board of Theater, Oper und Orchester GmbH Halle decided to give up the theater in Kardinal-Albrecht-Straße at the end of the 2011/12 season. The ensemble should remain as an independent division and use the other venues of the GmbH for its work. Planned cuts in grants by the state government threatened bankruptcy for the Theater, Oper und Orchester Halle GmbH in 2014. To consolidate the situation, there were again discussions about closing down the children's and youth theater division.

The discussion about the closure is currently over. The Thalia Theater Halle is an artistically independent member of the Theater, Oper und Orchester GmbH Halle .
