History and ensemble

The Bavarian State Theater , which emerged from the royal court theater , is one of the most traditional and important spoken theaters in Germany.

Beginnings

As early as the 16th and 17th centuries, actors' troops appeared at the court, including Thomas Sackville's troupe . In the Georgssaal in the new vestibule of the Residenz there were performances by Elector Max II Emanuel, in particular by French court actors. He also signed a contract in Venice with the comedy principal Francesco Calderoni, whose acting company he brought to his residence for the next few years.

In 1740, the painter Nikolaus Gottfried Stuber, who also worked as a stage designer under Elector Karl Albrecht, transformed this Georgssaal into a modern box theater, which fell victim to a fire ten years later, resulting in the Residenztheater, which under court director Joseph Anton von Seeau mainly performed operas has been. Nevertheless, under Max III. Joseph was already striving for a "national show stage", Seeau's efforts in this direction were supported financially and personally. In 1775 Gotthold Ephraim Lessing attended the performance of some of his works. Elector Karl Theodor von der Pfalz ruled in Bavaria from the end of 1777. Karl Theodor had fired his French actors that year and founded a German national theater in Mannheim . Under his government, the first standing German theater troupe in Munich moved into the “Electoral Court and National Theater” (as the court theater was called from 1795).

Royal Court and National Theater

With the elevation of Bavaria to a kingdom, the "Royal Court and National Theater" was created in 1806.

In 1831 Ferdinand Raimund performed his works for the first time, and in 1845 Johann Nestroy appeared in several roles. In the middle of the century, spoken theater, which had long been overshadowed by opera, gained in importance. In 1852 the premiere of Hebbel's Agnes Bernauer turned into a scandal. Actresses like Marie Dahn-Hausmann or Lilla von Bulyovsky sometimes played a role at court.

Under Ludwig II there were separate performances for the monarch in the court theater, and Josef Kainz also performed at that time. Klara Ziegler also had an engagement at the court theater. In 1880 the world premiere of Ibsen's new version of Nora or A Puppet's House grew into another scandal.

In 1893 Ernst von Possart became general director and artistic director of the royal court theaters, which marked the beginning of one of the most glamorous periods on this stage. He continued to appear there as an actor and director. Later, Ludwig Thomas pieces were part of the program every year.

State drama

When the revolutionary unrest also gripped Munich at the end of 1918, Viktor Schwanneke was brought back to Munich as interim director of what was now called the Bavarian State Theaters (State Opera and State Theater). The royal court drama had thus become the state drama.

In 1921 the world premiere of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Der Schwierige with Gustl Waldau and Elisabeth Bergner , which remained in the repertoire until 1932.

After the Second World War, the Staatsschauspiel experienced a heyday, especially under the management of Kurt Meisel . This manages to bind a particularly large number of Munich residents to the house. His ensemble includes Walter Schmidinger and Ingmar Bergman , who lived in Munich for a few years, realized a total of ten productions and even premiered " Scenes from a Marriage " as a theater version here in 1981.

In the seasons 2011/2012 to 2018/2019 the Residenztheater was directed by the Austrian Martin Kušej and presented international drama from Shakespeare and Schiller to Ibsen to the present day as well as experimental and open forms such as the theater evenings by Oliver Frljić , Milo Rau or Bernhard Mikeska.
