Christian Karl August Frays , from 1817 Freiherr von Frays , (born April 15, 1790 in Kreuznach , Electoral Palatinate , † October 24, 1863 in Munich ) was a Bavarian major general , chamberlain and director of the court theater.

Life

He was born in Kreuznach, the son of Johann Michael Frays, police commissioner and last mayor of the Electoral Palatinate before the French occupation of the city; later there French canton president.

Frays visited the Lyceum in Mainz, France at the time, and joined the French army on October 15, 1806 , to which he belonged until 1815 and in whose ranks he took part in the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 as a lieutenant . In 1815 he moved to the Bavarian Army as captain 2nd class .

On August 25, 1817, King Max I Joseph elevated the officer to the status of hereditary nobility and barons in Bavaria. He also became a chamberlain and in 1828 chamberlain . Frays temporarily transferred from the army to the gendarmerie . As a gendarmerie captain, he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown in 1831 and the Russian Order of St. Anne III in 1838 . Class and in 1839 the silver cross of the Greek Order of the Redeemer ; In 1840 he was promoted to major in the Pappenheim infantry regiment .

On February 1, 1844, King Ludwig I appointed the Frays director of the Munich court theater . As the successor of Count Eduard von Yrsch , he showed a lucky hand by promoting the later composer of the Bavarian State Hymn on the recommendation of Franz Lachner , Konrad Max Kunz , and hiring him as an opera choir conductor. Frays also rejected the fateful Lola Montez in 1846 , who applied to work as a dancer with him. She was only able to appear and establish herself there through personal protection from the king, which is why she intrigued against the theater manager, who was then replaced on January 1, 1848 by Johann Nepomuk von Poissl . When he switched to the theater, Frays had expressly reserved a return to the army. He did this at the beginning of 1848 and immediately became a colonel in the 2nd Infantry Regiment . After Lola Montez was expelled from Bavaria, Frays again acted as director of the court theater from July 3 of that year.

In 1851 Frays finally gave up his theater post and returned permanently to the military. From January 19 to September 19, 1851 he was in command of the Infantry Leib Regiment , then he became head of the Army Equipment Depot. In this position Frays was promoted to major general in 1853 and he took over the 2nd Infantry Brigade ; on August 23, 1855, he retired with a pension .

Because of his meritorious work as director of the court theater, the pensioner was asked again to take over this function, which he held again from February 1, 1857 to July 31, 1860, at the same time he became royal master of ceremonies . Only after he became ill and had repeatedly requested to be released from his office was this request granted.

Since 1851 Frays also wore the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of St. Michael .

He was married to Leopoldine, née Countess von Wiser (1796-1854). She was the daughter of Count Karl Theodor von Wiser and his wife Josepha Franziska von Erthal and holder of the Order of St. Anna . The three sons Theodor, Ferdinand and Friedrich emerged from the marriage, all of whom also became Bavarian chamberlains and officers.
