Gerhard Jelinek (born October 13, 1954 in Vienna ) is an Austrian journalist, television presenter and author.

Life

After attending the Piarist grammar school , he completed a law degree at the University of Vienna and also studied journalism for a few semesters .

Journalistic career

After completing his studies, Jelinek began his journalistic work at Radio Adria and the newspapers Die Presse and Wochenpresse . In 1989 he changed to the editorial team of the ORF - Inlandreport , later he was also responsible for the program of the Report International and from 2005 headed the programs Report , Frankly and Pressestunde .

After an e-mail from 2002 to the then ÖVP interior minister Ernst Strasser was made public in 2008 , in which Jelinek had expressed job wishes for senior ORF positions such as the editor-in-chief ("If the editor-in-chief is not already assigned, [ was this position] of course the politically most interesting position ”), he had to vacate the post of report chief. He was then supposed to head the TV science and documentary department , but was rejected in a vote by the editors' meeting.

Currently (as of 2015) Jelinek heads the ORF “Documentation and Contemporary History” department (where he also creates TV documentaries), the knowledge magazine Newton and the talk show Stöckl .

Political activity

In addition to his journalistic work, in the 1980s he was editor-in-chief of the ÖVP press service, as well as secretary and press spokesman for the then ÖVP general secretary Michael Graff in his office in the party headquarters.

Private

Jelinek is married to Martina Salomon , the editor-in-chief of KURIER .
