In 2015, Rau gathered 60 witnesses and experts for his Congo Tribunal in the Congolese civil war zone . "The most ambitious political theater project that has ever been staged," said The Guardian newspaper about the play. Raus' pre-criticized play Five Easy Pieces , in which children re-enact the crimes of child murderer Marc Dutroux , was the first foreign production to be awarded the special prize of the jury of the Belgian theater critics in 2016. In 2017 the Berlin Theatertreffen invited Five Easy Pieces .

Rau opened his first season at NTGent in 2018 with the piece "Lam Gods", which he and his ensemble developed based on the "Ghent Manifesto" (contained in his book Global Realism ) for the Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers. Deutschlandfunk saw the play as an “attempt to reconcile Ghent society, torn by conflicts and divisions, with the help of the largest work of art in the city.” At the beginning of his directorship, he also started the series “Goldenes Buch / Goldenes” at NTGent in cooperation with Verbrecher Verlag Book ”to publish his programmatic texts on theater, aesthetics and politics, as well as texts on the larger projects at NTGent.

Prize for European Encounters and Dialogue and, as the youngest winner, the Prize of the International Theater Institute (ITI) . In 2015 the Tages-Anzeiger wrote: “The“ Milometer ”has now become something of the gold standard of post-drama: Milo Rau, who fills the houses with documentary theatrical explosions, has succeeded in throwing his art far out of the ivory tower. So far that his person has solidified himself again into a projection figure. "

His work, which is often accompanied by trials and public disputes, has earned Rau the reputation of a scandalous director. So Rau's piece of Breivik's declaration and a. the National Theater and the Munich Haus der Kunst the performance denied, The Last Days of Ceausescu led to a process of the adopted son of the dictator against the director, at the Moscow trials , there was a raid of the Russian authorities and performances of Five Easy Pieces were in Singapore and various German cities censored or canceled. “Is there a political muddle at work here in the end? An artist who has put on the Superman costume and is now miming the world saver? “, Asked Esther Slevogt on nachtkritik.de on the occasion of the Raus Kongo Tribunal . Eugen Sorg noticed “excessive abuse of Switzerland” at Rau and accused him of lack of grip due to the lack of the “gravity of practical life”. Out to a text of the same name by Lenin alluding to an essay What to do? reveal "blasé cynicism, self-importance, and moral nihilism" behind alleged concern for the world. On the occasion of the awarding of the Peter Weiss Prize by laudator Carolin Emcke in 2017, the critic Magnus Klaue ironically described Rau as the “heart dramatist of the republic”. In his review, Klaue describes Rau as a “multifunctional I-AG that not only takes care of the production, but also the reception, criticism and propaganda exploitation of its own art output”.
