Swiss theater award
The Swiss Theater Prize has been awarded by the Federal Office of Culture since 2014 . It is given to people or institutions who have made a name for themselves in the diverse theatrical work of Switzerland. These include artistic achievements in acting and directing. The awards are endowed with CHF 30,000 for individuals and CHF 50,000 for institutions.
The jury consists of nine members who are elected for two years, with a maximum term of six years. The current president of the jury is Gianfranco Helbling , director of the Teatro Sociale in Bellinzona . The jury members should have a broad professional background, represent the various regions of Switzerland and also represent many facets of theater, trends and other fields such as theater education or cabaret as a branch of the performing arts.
The first award ceremony took place on May 22, 2014 as part of the 1st Swiss Theatertreffen in the Winterthur Theater; two awards were given in the Outstanding Actress / Outstanding Actor category and five other prizes were given to individuals or institutions.
In 2016, the Outstanding Actress / Outstanding Actor category was integrated into the theater awards. This should result in a further concentration of the prizes, but at the same time also within this category various artistic achievements in theatrical creation such as acting, directing, stage design etc. should be recognized.
