Roman Riklin (born December 23, 1971 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss composer , musician and author .

Life

Roman Riklin grew up in St. Gallen. From 1990–1996 he toured Switzerland with the dialect rock band Mumpitz, of which he was a lyricist and composer. In 1992 the band was awarded the title “Best Swiss Young Band”. In 1995 his hometown honored him for his work as a musician and lyricist as well as for his commitment as a co-founder of the "Ostschweizer Kulturmagazin Saiten ", whose editor-in-chief and publishing director he was until 1996, with the cultural promotion award.

Riklin composed theater music and, as an author and composer, developed the children's musical "Alfonsa Di Monsa" (2000) and "Manege free for Mircolino!" (2005). For the Lucerne Theater he wrote the music for the children's plays “Emil und die Detektiven” (2003) and “Das Gespenst von Canterville” (2006). He also wrote the pieces “Kaufhaus - Das Neue Deutsche Welle Musical” (2003) and “Welcome Tomorrow - Das musical ETHeater” (2005), which he developed for the 150th anniversary of ETH Zurich . In 2011, Riklin translated the lyrics for the German-language premiere of the Broadway musical Avenue Q at the St. Gallen Theater and the Mannheim National Theater . He also translated the Abba lyrics for the Swiss German premiere of Mamma Mia! at the Thunerseespiele (2018).

The musical " Ost Side Story " by Dominik Flaschka (book, dialogues, direction) and Roman Riklin (book, music, lyrics) premiered in spring 2015 at the Theater am Hechtplatz and received 9 nominations for the German Musical Theater Prize 2015 (including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Lyrics).

In 2016 the musical Mein Name ist Eugen was premiered in the Maag Music Hall . Roman Riklin developed the book, the lyrics and the music for the musical adaptation of the classic youth book of the same name by Klaus Schädelin. The work received 7 nominations for the German Musical Theater Prize 2016 (including best musical). In 2018, the touring musical Supermarket Ladies, developed again together with Flaschka, was premiered. It is the first musical to have a say.

Riklin celebrated the greatest success with the compilation musical Ewigi Liebi , which he developed in collaboration with the director Dominik Flaschka and was responsible for the idea, the book and the musical direction. In the five-year season from 2007 to 2012 and when it was revived in 2017, the musical recorded over 700,000 visitors. The CD "Ewigi Liebi - LIVE!" Entered the Swiss album charts at number 3 in December 2007 and achieved gold and platinum status. Ewigi Liebi is the most successful Swiss musical.

Roman Riklin and Dominik Flaschka were jointly honored with the 2017 Swiss Theater Prize for their contribution to popular, funny and intelligent music theater .

From 2005 to 2019 Riklin was on the road with the multi-instrumental cabaret trio Heinz de Specht and from 2004 to 2015 he was a member of the children's rock band “Marius & die Jagdkapelle”. He also writes songs for various Swiss cabaret artists, a. a. Michael Elsener , " Helga Schneider " (formerly at Acapickels ), Fabian Unteregger .
