Lake Thun Games
The Thunerseespiele are a musical event that has been taking place annually in Thun ( Canton Bern , Switzerland ) since 2003 .
Performances
The Lake Thun Games take place every year from mid-July to the end of August. The venue is the floating stage, which is set up at the Lachen area (near the Lachen Stadium) in Lake Thun and dismantled again after the event. The organizer of the event, which records around 75,000 spectators on 28 match days every year, is Thunerseespiele AG (spelling thunerSeespiele AG).
history
In the summer of 1999, the two initiators of the Thunerseespiele AG, Andreas Stucki and Ueli Bichsel, visited the Bregenz Festival and were inspired by the musical production there. They were convinced that Lake Thun, the mountains of the Bernese Oberland and the ambience in Thun offer just as good conditions for successfully performing musicals. Since 2003, annual musical productions have been presented on the temporary floating stage (self-promotion “Europe's most beautiful floating stage”) in front of the UNESCO-protected alpine panorama of the Eiger , Mönch and Jungfrau . There will be no performances in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The work Io senza te planned for this year will instead be presented in 2021.
In addition to musical classics such as Evita - The Musical or West Side Story , the Thunerseespiele also present their own productions (2010 Dällebach Kari - The Musical , 2011 Gotthelf - The Musical , 2013 The Old Lady - The Musical ).
In-house productions
Dällebach Kari - The Musical , 2010
The tragic and at the same time comical figure of Dällebach Kari is a legend in Switzerland . The impossible love story of an outsider moves people again and again and thus offers the perfect template for an emotional musical. Because of his harelip and the associated speech error , Kari was excluded from school. Later he fought for recognition with a biting joke and opened his own hairdressing salon in Bern's Neuengasse in 1900 . Suddenly he was lucky: A daughter from a good family, Annemarie, fell in love with him. But their love is doomed to fail; Annemary's parents forbid the relationship. As a result, Kari became more and more addicted to alcohol and thanks to his stories and anecdotes he became a well-known original. Eventually he got cancer . On the evening of July 31, 1931, Kari fell to her death from Bern's Kornhaus Bridge . But even after his death he lives on as a legend.
With various successful theater productions, the film by Kurt Früh from 1970 and the song by Mani Matter , Dällebach Kari became the most famous hairdresser in Switzerland. Together with the author Katja Früh and the composer Moritz Schneider, Heimatland Verlag (part of Thunerseespiele Management AG) developed a new version of the story for the Thunerseespiele, which premiered in 2010.
In 2011 Dällebach Kari - The Musical was also performed in Zurich and in 2012 in Bern . The executive producer of the production was Philip Delaquis , producers were Ueli Schmocker and Res Stucki.
Gotthelf - The Musical , 2011
The dairy in the Vehfreude by Jeremias Gotthelf (1797-1854), which served as the basis for the musical, is above all a love story based on the ancient fairytale scheme of Cinderella . What obstacles does Änneli, the former contract child , have to overcome before she can finallybe happywith Ammanns Felix, the most adored bachelor in the village? But the story of the newfangled cheese dairy, which causes confusion and excitement in the farming village of Vehfreude, is also a lesson in how politics was made in Switzerland then and now, and how big words and small egoisms never really go together . And last but not least, as is so often the case with Gotthelf, the story also contains a lot of comedy. Because Jeremias Gotthelf understood the rule very well, which still applies today: If you don't make people smile, you can't touch their hearts either.
Heimatland Verlag took the opportunity to develop a musical for the Thunerseespiele from the story of Käserei in der Vehfreude - mainly because in addition to the author Charles Lewinsky , composer Markus Schönholzer and director Stefan Huber, two other experienced professionals from the Swiss theater scene are with them were there.
The executive producer of the production was Philip Delaquis.
The Old Lady's Visit - The Musical , 2013
The Swiss musical The Visit of the Old Lady - The musical had its world premiere on July 16, 2013 in Thun.
The material for this comes from the Bern area and has been successful worldwide for 55 years. The work The visit of the old lady by Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990) was a. a. filmed with Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Quinn in the lead roles. This biting and entertaining criticism of (not only) the Swiss small town spirit premiered as a theater play in Zurich in 1956 and has since started a triumphal march all over the world.
In this play, described by Dürrenmatt as a “comedy of the boom”, the multimillionaire Claire Zachanassian returns to her hometown of Güllen after 45 years, which she once had to leave poor and dishonorable. Having become rich through nine marriages, she offers the village population a billion if in return her lover at the time, Alfred Ill, is killed. This immoral offer is initially rejected indignantly, but secretly everyone begins to count on the promised sum and to do business. Ill initially wants to flee from Güllen, but eventually surrenders to the village population.
The executive producers of the production were Philip Delaquis with Markus Dinhobl and from spring Res Stucki, Ueli Schmocker and Elsbeth Jungi.
After the Thun performance of The Visit of the Old Lady - The Musical , the production was played in February 2014 at the Ronacher Theater of the United Bühnen Vienna and in sold-out theaters in Japan. The Visit of the Old Lady - The Musical is the first Swiss musical production to be performed internationally. The Thun production also received seven audience awards in autumn 2014, making it the most popular musical of the 2014 season.
