The Lake Thun is an Alpine lake in the Bernese Oberland on the northern edge of the Alps . The lake is 17.5 km long and max. 3.5 km wide. Its area is 47.85 km²; This makes it the largest lake in Switzerland that is entirely in a canton . The maximum depth is 217 m.
History and geography
After the last ice age , the so-called Wendelsee was formed where there are two lakes today . Deposits of debris from the various mountain streams (especially from the Lombach and Lütschine ) created a plain, the “ Bödeli ” , roughly in the middle of the lake . This flood plain, on which the municipalities of Interlaken , Matten and Unterseen are located today , divided the lake into Lake Thun and Lake Brienz . During the Bronze Age, there was a pile dwelling settlement in the northern basin of Lake Thun .
The content of Lake Thun is around 6.5 km³. The eponymous city of Thun is located on the Aare that flows through the lake and leaves Lake Thun at its northern tip .
At normal water level, the lake level is 557.8 m above sea level. M. Lake Thun has a catchment area of 2500 km². During longer, heavy rainfall, the lake overflowed because the Aare's drainage capacity was limited. A flood relief tunnel has been in operation since 2009, with an additional discharge capacity of 100 m³ / s. The forward-looking regulation of flows from Lake Thun and the storage function of Lake Thun spare the low-lying city of Bern some flooding .
The maximum discharge without a tunnel is 345 m³ per second, the mean discharge is 110 m³ / s. Its main tributary, the Aare, is fed in the southeast by Lake Brienz, which is 6 meters higher.
Economy and tourism
Several professional fishermen make their living from fishing in Lake Thun. In 2001 their total yield was 53,048 kilograms.
In 1835 Johannes Knechtenhofer and his brothers operated the first steamship, the Bellevue , on the lake. Today BLS AG operates a fleet of ten ships, including the historic Blümlisalp paddle steamer and, from 2001 to 2003, the dragon ship (converted motor ship Stadt Thun), which is known far beyond the region.
Viticulture is practiced on the shores of Lake Thun in the municipalities of Thun , Spiez , Oberhofen and Hilterfingen . White varieties are Müller-Thurgau and Chardonnay , red varieties are Garanoir and Pinot Noir . The Thunersee wine-growing region has had the legal status of an AOC since January 1, 2008 .
As in other Swiss lakes, several thousand tons of ammunition were sunk in Lake Thun in the 20th century .
A 56-kilometer panoramic hiking trail with several large suspension bridges has been laid out around Lake Thun since 2011.
