The Hallwilersee is a lake in the Swiss plateau and, like the Baldeggersee a little further south, lies in the Seetal . It is 8.4 kilometers long, 1.5 kilometers wide at its widest point and a maximum of 47 meters deep with an average depth of 28 meters. Its area is 10.3 square kilometers, five sixths of which are in the districts of Lenzburg and Kulm in the canton of Aargau and one sixth in the constituencies of Hochdorf and Sursee in the canton of Lucerne. In terms of size, it ranks 16th among the Swiss lakes. The volume of the lake is 0.215 cubic kilometers, its catchment area 128 square kilometers. The main inflow or outflow is the Aabach , which flows into the Aare at Möriken-Wildegg . In addition, numerous small streams flow into the lake.

The lake can freeze over in cold winter weather. It was last frozen over completely in 1986. The village of Hallwil is not on the lake, but about two kilometers from its northern end. The name of the lake comes from the Lords of Hallwyl .

history

The Hallwilersee was created during the Würme Ice Age when a terminal moraine was raised .

People lived in lakeside settlements on Lake Hallwil as early as the Middle Stone Age , the Neolithic Age and the Bronze Age . There was a Roman settlement near Seengen . Around 1300 the lake had different names: Halwiler se , lacus de Seingen (after Seengen), Escherse (after Aesch ). But then the name of the bailiff, Hallwyler, caught on. These had the blood and lower jurisdiction over the lake as well as the fishing and shipping rights . The maritime court met on the bank in Birrwil , Beinwil am See , Mosen and Seengen. From 1429 half of the buses fell to the fishermen.

It was not until 1859 that Lake Hallwil became a publicly accessible body of water. In 1883 the Seetalbahn was opened along the western bank, and in 1888 excursion traffic by ships began.

On September 17, 1938, Sir Malcolm Campbell set a world record on Lake Hallwil with his self-constructed motor racing boat at a speed of 210.66 km / h.

For the future drinking water supply , the municipal assembly of Meisterschwanden unanimously approved the construction loan for a lake waterworks in Lake Hallwil in June 2019 .

ecology

Due to the intensive agriculture around the lake with the corresponding use of fertilizers , the Hallwilersee was almost a "dead" lake in the early 1980s. Because of the high proportion of phosphates , huge carpets of algae formed . The dead algae sank to the bottom of the lake and rot there, using up the oxygen available there. As a result, other aquatic plants and fish did not get enough oxygen to survive. That is why the lake has been artificially ventilated since 1985. In winter, compressed air is blown into the lake bed through nozzles. In addition to natural circulation, the lake receives an artificial circulation aid. Water is transported from the depths to the surface and is supplied with oxygen from the atmosphere. The completely mixed lake is enriched with around 1000 tons of oxygen.

In summer the lake is artificially supplied with oxygen. Depending on requirements, compressed air or oxygen is added to the water in coarse or fine bubbles via six diffusers directly above the lake bed at a depth of 45 meters. This replaces 400 to 600 tons of the oxygen consumed in deep water. The heated surface layer of the lake is not disturbed.

This artificial respiration and the reduction in the use of fertilizers made it possible to reduce the phosphate content of the water from 250 mg / m³ (1975) to around 17 mg / m³ (2014).

tourism

Hallwilersee from the ship

Lake Hallwil is a popular destination for day trips. There are numerous restaurants and bathing beaches in the villages on the lakeshore. A hike leads on the 22-kilometer lakeshore path around the lake, whereby the bicycle ban around the Hallwilersee must be observed. About a kilometer north of the lake is the Hallwyl moated castle on an island in the Aabach .

During the summer season, various scheduled and extra ships operated by the Hallwilersee shipping company . It was founded in 1888 and today has the following five ships (as of 2018): MS Brestenberg , MS Delphin , MS Hallwil , MS Seerose and MS Seetal . The SBB Seetalbahn ( Lenzburg - Lucerne ) runs along the entire west bank . The east bank is served by bus lines.
