Beinwil am See (in local dialect : Böiu, [ ˈb̥œi̯ʊ ]) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Kulm district , is located in the Seetal on the west bank of Lake Hallwil and borders the canton of Lucerne . Until 1950, the official name of the municipality was Beinwil (Kulm district) .

geography

The elongated village consists of several districts that have grown together over time. By far the largest part of the settlement with the districts Hinterdorf, Vorstatt and Büel lies on a narrow terrace on the eastern slopes of the Ischlag and Homberg, around seventy meters above sea level. A flat spur of the Wynental valley extends between these two hills ; the transition between the two valleys is a maximum of 562 meters high. The shores of Lake Hallwil are largely undeveloped, only the small Unterdorf is located directly on the lake. The five villages of Beinwil am See, Burg , Menziken , Reinach and Pfeffikon have merged into a coherent agglomeration with around 20,000 inhabitants, the boundaries between the once separate settlements are barely recognizable.

The area of the municipality is 382 hectares , of which 78 hectares are forested and 131 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 660 meters on the eastern slope of Homberg, the lowest at 449 meters on the shores of Lake Hallwil. Neighboring communities in the canton of Aargau are Menziken in the southwest, Reinach in the west, Birrwil in the north, Meisterschwanden in the northeast and Fahrwangen in the east. On the Lucerne side, Beinwil borders Mosen in the southeast and Beromünster in the south .

history

Find site Beinwil am See – Ägelmoos : Dump situation in the area of the cultivated layer lying open on the lake bed in 2012

In 1996 a lakeside settlement (pile dwelling village) was discovered in the Ägelmoos area on a beach slab near the shore (see Beinwil am See – Ägelmoos ). This was probably settled in the Neolithic , Early Bronze and Late Bronze Ages, i. H. in the period between 4500 BC BC and 850 BC Chr. Beinwil am See-Ägelmoos could thus be one of the earliest lakeside settlements on the Swiss plateau. Today (2019) the remains of the settlement in Lake Hallwil are completely under water. As a protective measure, they were covered with a geotextile and a gravel layer in 2017 . Since 2011, the site has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage « Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps ».

During excavations in 1928–31, the remains of the wall of a Roman manor were uncovered, as well as a brick stamp of the 21st Legion and Terra Sigillata vessels from the late 2nd century. The first written mention of the village comes from the 11th century (1045 vineta autem in… Peinuuilare… in Beinwile ; 1036 id est Rinacha, Beinwile ). The place name goes back to a combination of an Old High German personal name Bāgo or Beino / Peino and the term -wīlāri, which is common in Alemannic foundations , to designate new court settlements.

In the Middle Ages the village was under the rule of the Counts of Lenzburg , from 1173 on that of the Counts of Kyburg . After these died out, the Habsburgs took over sovereignty and blood jurisdiction in 1273 . The lords of Beinwil, first mentioned in 1153, ruled the village in the name of these noble houses. The family was only of local importance and died out in the mid-14th century, the location of their castle can no longer be determined precisely.

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Beinwil now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the so-called Berner Aargau . The lower jurisdiction first came to the Truchsessen von Wolhusen around 1300 , and in 1501 to the Beromünster Canons . Finally it was bought by Bern in 1520, whereupon Beinwil formed its own judicial district within the Lenzburg office . Most of the tithes and land interest had to be paid to Beromünster, even after the introduction of the Reformation in 1528. In March 1798, with the help of the invading French troops , the population freed themselves from the yoke of the «Gracious Lords» of Bern, whereupon the French left the Helvetic Republic exclaimed. Since then, Beinwil has belonged to the then founded canton of Aargau.

The processing of cotton had already been established in the 18th century, but the economic boom did not begin until the first cigar factory was founded in 1841. On September 3, 1883, the community was connected to the railway network when the first section of the Seetalbahn between Lucerne and Beinwil am See was opened; the extension to Lenzburg followed on October 15 of the same year. On January 23, 1887, the branch line to Reinach went into operation. At one point there were no fewer than twenty cigar factories in the village, but as the 20th century progressed , the tobacco industry was gradually replaced by other industries. In 1950 the municipality replaced the previous name Beinwil (Kulm district) with Beinwil am See .

Attractions

reformed Church

There are two more recent churches in Beinwil. The reformed church was only consecrated in 1935 because the village belonged to the Reinach parish from the time the Reformation was introduced until 1932. From the small chapel, which was demolished in 1852, individual elements were taken over for the new building. The Roman Catholic Church, which belongs to the Menziken-Reinach parish, was founded in 1964.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In white oblique blue tip." It is the coat of arms of the Lords of Beinwil. The original coat of arms, which has existed since 1598, showed a boat with two ferrymen on the lake. This motif could never be implemented convincingly in heraldry . From 1945 onwards, various local companies decorated their packaging with the coat of arms of the Lords of Beinwil, which quickly caught on and was officially introduced in 1952.
