The Neue Kantonsschule Aarau (NKSA) is a public secondary school in Aarau . It consists of a high school and a technical secondary school . The NKSA is currently attended by over 900 students.

After the introduction of grammar school structures in the 1970s, it was called Kantonsschule Zelgli from 1978 . After the then existing grammar school on the Aarau square was renamed Old Cantonal School Aarau in the 1980s, the Zelgli Cantonal School changed its name to New Cantonal School Aarau (NKSA) in 1989 for reasons of symmetry.

history

The history of the school can be traced back to the 18th century. In 1787 a private subsidiary was set up in Aarau . The first teacher was Dorothea Ziegler. After a few years the school must have gone under. In any case, it was formally re-established in 1822. In 1935 it was renamed the daughter school , in 1989 it was converted into a (two-year) diploma middle school (DMS), which was finally expanded into a (three-year) specialist middle school (FMS) at the beginning of the 21st century. After completing the FMS, there has recently been the option of acquiring the specialist baccalaureate, which opens up access to the technical college.

The history of the grammar school course dates back to 1873. The seminar for teachers was opened at that time . Nationalization did not take place until 1911. From 1919 to 1978 a training school (1st to 6th grade) was attached to the teachers' seminar. Since 1902, "female advanced training courses" have also been introduced under the auspices of the Aarau District Cultural Society. This resulted in the home economics teacher seminar , which was transferred to Brugg in the early 1960s .

The 1960s brought two big changes: on the one hand, co-education was introduced, and on the other hand, due to the lack of teachers at the time, a branch school was opened in Zofingen in 1965 , which became independent after just a few years. From 1976 the transfer of seminar teacher training to the newly founded HPL (Higher Pedagogical Training Institute) in Zofingen. The canton school, which was set up at the same time, initially comprised types D (modern language) and PSG (pedagogical-social high school), which since 2002 have been completely replaced by Matura classes according to MAR (Swiss Matura Recognition Regulations ). In 2010 the New Cantonal School Aarau received the School Prize of the Science Olympiad . In 2017, the Swiss Youth Research Foundation presented the New Aarau Cantonal School with an award for the school with the most award winners in 2006-2016.

Architecture, artistic equipment

The old building in the quiet Zelgliquartier, inaugurated in 1955, is the work of the Oeschger brothers , whose names are also associated with the National Library in Bern (1927/1931), the City High-rise in Zurich (1953/1958) and several airport buildings (including Kloten 1947/1962) is.

The old building soon became too small for the growing number of students. In 1966 and 1970, provisional buildings were therefore erected to counteract the lack of space. The new building was inaugurated in 1989, a compact, simple and transparent work by the architects Alfons Barth and Hans Zaugg .

Art in the old building: The majolica (wall ceramics) by Wilhelm Schmid (1892–1971) and a glass wall by Max Hunziker (1901–1976) are worth mentioning .
