Life

Elise Hunziker was born in Oberkulm in 1860 as the daughter of a district administrator. After training as a teacher at the Aarau Teachers' Seminar (the forerunner of today's New Aarau Canton School ), she worked as a teacher in the Aarau area. She then worked as a teacher in France and England. In this way she was able to acquire the means to study at the Grand Ducal School of Painters in Karlsruhe in 1891 .

She then returned to Aarau, where she taught English from 1902 to 1930. In addition, she ran a studio as a kind of leisure workshop. She also continued to teach as a private and painting teacher. She was mainly interested in the illustration of plants and fruits. At that time she painted plants for the Aarau politician and orchid collector Gottfried Keller that he himself had looked for or had been sent to him from all over the world for his scientific work. This collection is now kept in Aarau's Naturama .
