The Diplommittelschule ( DMS ) was a general school type of the upper secondary level in Switzerland and the predecessor of the Fachmittelschule  (FMS).

The diploma middle school emerged from the higher daughter school . The focus was on general education and arts education .

The duration of the training was 2 to 3 years , depending on the canton . Upon completing school, the graduate received a federally - Switzerland-wide - recognized diploma , which enabled access to various higher technical schools and universities of applied sciences , but was not a Matura and therefore also did not allow studying at universities.

Specifically, the DMS served as a preparation for vocational training that, on the one hand, could not be implemented through an apprenticeship directly after completing secondary level I , and on the other, did not require a Matura at that time, such as nurses, kindergarten teachers or primary teachers. The majority of the students were female.

The diploma middle schools as well as the subject-specific business diploma school  (WDS) were recently controversial. Critics argued that the diploma schools were superfluous alongside the cantonal and vocational high schools. In the 2000s, it was gradually replaced by the similarly structured technical secondary school.
