A pupil receives his first school leaving certificate after successfully completing his training at a general school . The school leaving certificate is part of the so-called authorization system, whereby the issuing institution enables the further school or professional career. That is why successfully completing school plays such an important role in a person's life.

School leaving qualifications in Germany

There are four possible school-leaving qualifications in Germany:

  1. Abitur (general or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification )
  2. Technical college entrance qualification (general or subject-specific technical college entrance qualification)
  3. Middle school leaving certificate (secondary school leaving certificate and comparable school leaving certificates)
  4. Secondary school leaving certificate and qualifying secondary school leaving certificate

School leavers in Germany without a secondary school leaving certificate

In the year of the 2010 graduation, 53,100 pupils finished their school career without a secondary school leaving certificate. This meant that 7% of a year did not succeed in obtaining at least one secondary school certificate. The proportion is above average in all eastern German federal states. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, for example, 14% of a year group left school without a secondary school leaving certificate, in Saxony-Anhalt 13%.
