function

The function of higher vocational training has to be differentiated depending on the necessary previous education.

Professions such as federal dipl. An electrician , automobile salesman or master builder require relevant basic vocational training and many years of professional experience. The focus here is on deepening specialist skills and building leadership skills. The Federal Diploma should enable people to run their own business or branch, especially in the craft sector.

On the other hand, there are professions such as police officers and driving instructors . A degree at upper secondary level is also required here, but not directly based on it. In these cases, the qualification at upper secondary level serves to ensure a certain personal maturity and life experience. For the professional examination, the profession is learned from the ground up and the training path may be prescribed (→ not open to self-taught / self-study).

In between there are training courses for federal dipl. Photo designer, dipl. Nursing specialist HF and so on, where relevant previous training is credited but is not required.

statistics

There are around 240 recognized professional examinations and around 170 higher specialist examinations. Every year around 26,600 people acquire a federally recognized qualification in higher vocational training (as of 2013).

International classification

The international classification is difficult. Professions that are trained at university level in other countries can be found in higher vocational training in Switzerland. (see also academic quota )

The health sector is going through or has just passed through an academisation in both countries, which already leads to national difficulties with the assignment.

Classification

The offers are at the tertiary level ( ISCED 5B). The requirements are at least an upper secondary level qualification (ISCED 3). In contrast to the higher education sector (ISCED 5A), no Matura ((technical) higher education entrance qualification is required.
