Markus Hediger (born March 31, 1959 in Zurich ) is a Swiss writer and translator .

Life

Markus Hediger spent his childhood and youth in Reinach . After graduation at the Neue Kantonsschule Aarau he studied from 1980 Romance and literary criticism (the latter at Werner Weber ) at the University of Zurich and graduated in 1990 with the licentiate from. In 1984/85 he was a German assistant at the Lycée Montaigne in Bordeaux .

In 1975 he discovered France, especially Paris . There he met the Lebanese poet and playwright Georges Schehadé in 1979 , who opened up new horizons for him and whom he visited regularly until his death in 1989. Other important encounters for the development of his personality and his artistic understanding were the poets Erika Burkart and Guillevic as well as the novelists Hugo Loetscher , Walter Vogt , Otto Steiger , Julien Green and Georges Borgeaud .

Markus Hediger started at an early age to write adventure stories and later short stories and a novel in German. In 1977 he began to learn the French language. It still serves him today to express very personal things, whereas his mother tongue, German, is the language into which he translates novels, stories, poems and articles from French. In 1978 his first lyric text was written in French, and 18 years later his first volume of poetry, Ne retournez pas la pierre (1996), was published. Also in 1978 he started a new translation of the piece Huis Clos by Jean-Paul Sartre and the one-act play Lucienne de Carpentras by Yves Navarre . His first translation was published while he was still a student: The Exile of Grado (1984) by Jacques Mercanton . This was followed by over twenty other publications after 1990.

Markus Hediger was a member of the Olten Group from 1991 to 2002 , which he represented at the CEATL - Conseil Européen des Associations de Traducteurs Littéraires - from 1999 to 2002 . He held the same function from 2003 to 2013 at the newly founded Association of Swiss Authors and Authors of Switzerland (AdS), of which he was a board member from 2007 to 2013.

2011 he was u. a. to the International Poetry Festival Rosario , 2012 to the Rilke Festival in Siders, 2014 to the International Poetry Festival Medellín , 2016 to the International Poetry Festival Lima and the Festival Europa in versi in Como , 2017 to the Literaturtage Zofingen and several times to the Seetaler Poesiesommer .

Markus Hediger has been President of the Peter Mieg Foundation in Lenzburg since December 2018 .
