Nicolas Bouvier (born March 6, 1929 in Lancy ; died February 17, 1998 in Geneva ) was a Swiss writer, travel writer , photographer and journalist . With his travelogues, he became a cult author of this genre.

Life

Nicolas Bouvier grew up in Geneva, where he studied humanities and law. In 1953 he broke off his studies and together with his friend, the painter Thierry Vernet , started a trip in a Fiat Topolino from Geneva via Yugoslavia, Turkey, Iran and Pakistan to Kabul. In 1955 he traveled to Sri Lanka alone and had to spend nine months in the port city of Galle because of his malaria disease . He then went to Japan and returned to Switzerland in 1956. On his return he wrote L'usage du monde ( The Experience of the World ). Further longer stays abroad etc. a. in Japan, China and Korea followed in the 1960s. After Manuel Gasser , he was the second president of the « Foundation for Photography » from 1980 to 1983 , which had been established on May 4, 1971 by Rosellina Burri-Bischof , Manuel Gasser, Hans Finsler and others.

It was not until 1981 that he published his experiences and hallucinations in Sri Lanka in a book entitled Le poisson-scorpion ( scorpion fish ). The documentary Nicolas Bouvier, 22 Hospital Street by Christoph Kühn , released in 2005, describes these recordings in a collage and merges them with interviews with contemporary witnesses and old film documents.
