Stefan Doubt (born December 22, 1967 in Zurich ) is a Swiss translator and journalist .

Life

Stefan Zweifel studied philosophy , comparative literature and Egyptology at the University of Zurich . He wrote his doctoral thesis in philosophy together with Michael Pfister on Sade , Hegel and La Mettrie . Doubt became known through the new translation of Sade's main works Justine and Juliette , which he had also worked on with Michael Pfister and which he had begun at the age of 17.

In addition, he played a leading role in exhibitions on Dadaism and Surrealism .

Until 2004 he was in charge of the trilingual culture magazine Gazzetta . He writes articles for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Weltwoche , the Swiss online magazine "Republik" and the magazines du and Literatures .

Literary club

From April 2007 to May 2014, Stefan Zweifel was a participant in the literary club program on Swiss television , which also runs on the 3sat cultural program . As the successor to Iris Radisch , he moderated the show from September 2012 until his controversial departure from the team of critics, which was generally perceived in connection with a scandal with panelist Elke Heidenreich : Stefan Zweifel had correctly reproached her in the program on April 22, 2014 that a supposed quote from Martin Heidegger could not be found in the book discussed. Doubt then demanded that the editorial team of the show examine the quote in question. Because this remained inactive, he further demanded the removal of editor-in-chief Esther Schneider - whereupon the SRF separated from him.

SRF has denied a connection between the separation and the controversy with Elke Heidenreich. Heidenreich also emphasized in a statement that the process had been "taken up by the press hastily and without reflection". She finished the sentence in question “with my words without further quoting”, “left it open at the end, it was clearly an oral speech, it was clearly no longer a quotation.” Also from her point of view, there was no connection between the discussion There was no doubt that the moderator and the controversy in the live round existed.

In retrospect, Doubt contradicted this representation. Various media criticized the behavior of Swiss television. The literary scholar Silvio Vietta stated in 2015 that a well-known literary critic used a “wrong Heidegger sentence” to accuse this “evil anti-Semitism”. When the moderator confronted her with this fact, the critic lost control and threw Heidegger's book on the floor.

In the aftermath, Doubt and SRF reached an agreement before the justice of the peace . The broadcaster subsequently wrote a letter praising the former moderator's “profound philological knowledge”.
