The trade journal Translate (up to H.1, 1997: The Translator. Discussion Papers and Information ) was founded in 1965 as an association journal for the Association of German-speaking Translators of Literary and Scientific Works , VdÜ, with varying publication intervals. The magazine is now published every six months and informs the public about the activities of all German-language translators of literary and scientific works, especially in terms of content and professional practice, but also with reference to the legal and economic situation of the usually freelance literary translators in relation to the publishers.

The articles describe the profession and art of literary translation, in the past, present and future, also in relation to individual foreign languages ​​that translators call the "source language". The magazine portrays notable people from its own and related industries, e.g. B. from the publishing industry, it brings event reports of special occasions as well as the appreciations that its authors have written - mostly as speeches - for recently awarded translator awards. There are articles about the changing job description or about individual translation approaches or other challenges, and the translators exchange ideas with one another in a forum.

Articles on the professional knowledge of literary translators as well as reviews of subject-related books or websites are also published regularly , and there is also a PC section with links and tips on using electronic media at work.

Since it was founded, translation has been done by volunteer editors, and employees also create the texts free of charge. The magazine is a joint project of the entire association, and external supporters are also involved. The editorial team has been supported by an eight-person advisory board since 2016.

Online presence and archive

The magazine's website went online in 2016. An archive of the previous editions is available and can be accessed alphabetically using keywords ("topics") or author names. Long ago numbers of "The Translator" are currently (2017) not yet online, the archive is continuously being expanded. In addition, there is space in full for honors for award winners, which are printed as an extract. New issues are accessible online free of charge six months after they have been published. Issue 1 of a year appears in April, issue 2 in October.

All booklets from No. 1 onwards can be viewed in print and digitally archived by a European College of Translators in Straelen and there. Different volumes can be found in the relevant specialist libraries in the three German-speaking countries, and sometimes in other countries, particularly in some Goethe Institutes .
