The European Translators College North Rhine-Westphalia in Straelen eV (EÜK) is a German association. It serves to promote professional literary translations and was founded on January 10, 1978 on the initiative of Beckett translator Elmar Tophoven , who was born in Straelen , and Klaus Birkenhauer (1934–2001), then chairman of the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works . The model for this was the medieval translation school in Toledo , in which groups of translators translated the Greek classics, which were only preserved in Arabic, into Latin. The EÜK has the world's first and largest special library for literary and non-fiction translators with a stock of 125,000 volumes, including 35,000 lexicons, dictionaries and reference works in 275 languages and dialects.

Funding is mainly provided by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city of Straelen and project funds from various institutions.

The association cooperates with the Kunststiftung NRW in the award of their Straelen Translator Prize endowed with 25,000 euros by the Kunststiftung NRW as well as in the Straelen Atrium Talks, which have been taking place regularly at the EÜK since 2007 and in which a well-known German author and his foreign translators spend several days working on his current one Werk works so that all problems that arise during the translation can be discussed and clarified.

Every year around 750 guests from around 50 countries come to work.
