Straelen atrium discussion
The Straelen Atrium Talks of the Kunststiftung NRW are an international series of events on the problem and improvement of literary translations.
Facility
The discussions were initiated in December 2007 by the European College of Translators in cooperation with the Kunststiftung NRW . Once or twice a year, outstanding German-speaking authors work on the current work with their foreign translators for several days.
aims
Many books present literary translators with such specific linguistic and factual problems that ideally they can only be translated adequately in direct contact with the author. The NRW Art Foundation would like to acknowledge with this particular project, the artistic work of literary translators and literary translators and support and help to avoid mistakes and misunderstandings in language and cultural transfer; In addition, the reception of German-language literature abroad is to be promoted and the quality of translated literature in general increased.

At the invitation of the European Translators' College and the Kunststiftung NRW , the Turkish-born German-speaking author Feridun Zaimoglu opened the series “Straelener Atrium Talks of the Kunststiftung NRW” in December 2007 with his novel Leyla .

Authors and their translators in conversation
The author Julia Franck , who was awarded the German Book Prize 2007, met the translators of her novel Die Mittagsfrau in July 2008 . The multiple award-winning author Ingo Schulze worked with 20 translators of his novel Adam and Evelyn in May 2009 as part of the Straelen Atrium Talks. The winner of the German Book Prize 2008, Uwe Tellkamp , met the translators of his excellent book Der Turm in the first week of September 2009 . Juli Zeh worked with her translators from August 30th to September 2nd, 2010 on the translation of Corpus Delicti . In March 2011, Günter Grass met his translators in the European Translators' College in Straelen as part of the 6th Straelen Atrium Discussion and worked on his work Grimm's Words . In March 2012, Eugen Ruge , the winner of the German Book Prize 2011, met the translators of his award-winning novel In times of waning light . During the 8th Straelen Atrium Talk, Sibylle Lewitscharoff worked with the translators of her work in Blumenberg in September 2012 . At the end of August 2014, Katja Petrowskaja, the 2013 Ingeborg Bachmann Prize winner, met the translators of her novel Maybe Esther in Straelen . From November 3 to 7, 2014, Saša Stanišić , the winner of the Leipzig Book Prize 2014, met more than a dozen translators of his novel Before the Festival in the European College of Translators. In April 2015 the author Judith Hermann worked with the translators of her book Aller Liebe Anfang in Straelen. At the beginning of September 2015, Lutz Seiler , the winner of the German Book Prize 2014, met the translators of his award-winning novel Kruso . In June 2016, the author Jenny Erpenbeck worked with the translators of her novel Going, Going, Going for the European College of Translators. In July 2016, the author Ilija Trojanow met with the translators of his book Power and Resistance in Straelen. As part of the 15th Straelen Atrium Discussion, the writer Christoph Ransmayr worked with the translators of his novel Cox or Der Lauf der Zeit in Straelen. In November 2017, Sasha Marianna Salzmann met the translators of her book Ausser sich as part of the 16th Straelen Atrium Talk. The translators from Sebald-Werke met for the 17th atrium discussion in October 2018. From May 21 to 27, 2019, Judith Schalansky made a guest appearance with the translators in Straelen to work on her book Directory of Some Losses as part of the 18th Straelen Atrium Discussion of the Kunststiftung NRW . Most recently, the editors of the Trimaran literary magazine met in November 2019 for the 19th atrium discussion. In August 2020, the award-winning author Saša Stanišić will be a guest, who will meet the translators of his novel Origin as part of the 20th Straelen Atrium Discussion of the Kunststiftung NRW .
