Judith Schalansky (born September 20, 1980 in Greifswald ) is a German writer , book designer and editor .

life and work

Judith Schalansky studied art history at the FU Berlin and communication design at the FH Potsdam . After completing her studies in 2007, she taught typographical basics at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences until 2009 .

Schalansky began her journalistic activities in 2006 with the typographic compendium Fraktur mon Amour, before two years later she failed to make her literary debut Blau ist dir . Schalansky designed several of her books, which regularly win her design awards, herself. Both her atlas of the remote islands and her educational novel, The Giraffe's Neck , published two years later, were awarded first prize by the Book Art Foundation . Schalansky's books have been translated into more than 20 languages.

Since spring 2013 she has published the book series Naturkunden at Matthes & Seitz Berlin .

Schalansky is a member of the PEN Center Germany . In 2019 she was elected to the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and accepted into the German Academy for Language and Poetry .

Private

Judith Schalansky lives with her partner Bettina Hoppe in Berlin .
