The Hermann Schmidt publishing house in Mainz is a specialist publisher for typography , graphic design and creative advertising in the German-speaking area.

history

The roots of the Hermann Schmidt publishing house go back to the H. Schmidt university printing company founded in 1945 .

The lawyer Hanns Krach founded the company on April 1, 1945 and published several legal specialist publications. Hermann Schmidt joined the company in 1952 and ran it as the sole owner from 1959 to 1986 . His publishing activity was entirely dedicated to his adopted home Mainz and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs joined his father’s print shop on January 1, 1986 and was solely responsible for it from 1988 to the end of 2013. As early as the late 1980s, he published lavishly designed books on typography , graphic design and art, for which he has received several national and international awards .

Since January 1, 1999, the Hermann Schmidt Mainz publishing house has been an independent publishing company with around twelve employees. Karin Schmidt-Friderichs has been supporting program planning since 1992 and is responsible for marketing and sales. The company logo , the Aldusblatt , goes back to the early Venetian printer and publisher Aldus Manutius and stands as a symbol for books of timeless beauty. The publisher is a member of the German Book Trade Association .

Awards

On December 10, 2014, the Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate , Malu Dreyer, awarded Karin and Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs the State's Order of Merit for their commitment to beautiful books. On January 25, 2018, Karin and Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs received the antiquarian bookshop award, endowed with 10,000 euros, for their publishing work with special mention of the quality philosophy, which not only refers to the books, but also includes the publisher's catalogs.

On September 17, 2019, the publisher was awarded the German Publishing Prize.

Publishing program

Standard works play a major role in the publishing program. Many titles have received multiple awards in national and international competitions. Nea Machina, according to Jochen Rädeker the “creative bible of our days”, was awarded the silver ADC nail. Thomas Lupo's instructions for breaking out, which shows how creativity can change the world with the simplest of means, was also awarded the ADC, DDC and red dot . Or decodeunicode , which - awarded the red dot - enables access to all 109,242 characters in the world. The publisher is regularly represented among the most beautiful German books awarded by the Stiftung Buchkunst, most recently with the Book of Nights and From Leaf to Leaf .

Label Printed in Germany with love

The publisher deliberately prints in Germany. He cooperates with FSC-, PEFC- and EMAS-certified suppliers and thus assumes responsibility not only for content and design, but also for the production of his works. The label “printed in Germany with love” was created to label books that have been printed in this sustainable way in-house.

Publishers

Karin and Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs also advocate the conscious use of graphic design and visual communication in addition to their publishing activities . They give around 30 lectures a year at home and abroad, give seminars and are available to students twice a year on what is known as the “portfolio day” with advice, action and feedback.

Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs is a founding member of the Typografie Forum, a member of the board of the Gutenberg Society , a member of the Type Directors Club of New York (TDC) and currently a member of the Board , the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI) and the Society of Typographic Designers .

Karin Schmidt-Friderichs worked on a voluntary basis from 2003 to 2011 as chairwoman of the vocational training committee of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels for basic and advanced training . From 2011 to 2016 she was chairwoman of the board of the Buchkunst Foundation . Since March 2018 she has represented the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels in the literature conference and this in the German cultural council.
