Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs

Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs (born June 13, 1959 ) is a German publisher and typographer .

Life

After graduating from high school at the state Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium in Mainz, Schmidt-Friderichs completed an apprenticeship as typesetter at the Allgemeine Zeitung Mainz, as one of the last to be trained in metal typesetting. He also studied art history.

After studying business administration at the FH Druck (now Hochschule der Medien ) in Stuttgart, he worked at Klett-Cotta in production, at Cantz he became an assistant to the management and after a year at the management consultancy Baumgartner und Partner, he joined the university printing company H in 1986 . Schmidt , which he assumed sole responsibility in 1988.

Schmidt-Friderichs has been running the Hermann Schmidt publishing house together with his wife Karin since 1992 and publishes around 20 to 25 titles on typography, graphic design and creativity every year. Books published by him are regularly awarded in international creative competitions and distributed worldwide in international licensed editions .

He is involved in the boards of the Type Directors Club of New York and the international Gutenberg Society as well as in the media committee of the IHK for Rheinhessen . He is a member of the Art Directors Club for Germany and the Art Directors Club of Europe, the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI) and a founding member of the Typography Forum.

Honors

On December 10, 2014, the Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate , Malu Dreyer, awarded Karin and Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs the State's Order of Merit for their commitment to beautiful books.

In 2018 Karin and Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs were awarded the Antiquaria Prize .
