Karin Schmidt-Friderichs
Karin Schmidt-Friderichs (born October 29, 1960 ) is a publisher at the Hermann Schmidt publishing house . Since October 26, 2019, she has been the head of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels .
Life
After graduating from high school, Schmidt-Friderichs completed a photo internship at FC Gundlach in Hamburg as well as several architectural internships in Germany and abroad. From 1980 to 1990 - with interruptions due to the birth of her daughters Hannah (1985) and Julia (1986) - she studied architecture at the University of Stuttgart . Karin Schmidt-Friderichs then worked from 1990 to 1992 as an employee and partly as a freelance architect .
Since 1992 she has been running the Hermann Schmidt publishing house together with her husband Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs . She is primarily responsible for the areas of branding , PR, sales and programming. Since 1997 she has been teaching typography and visual communication as well as for marketing in the graphic industry, advising companies in the publishing industry and beyond on questions of branding and branding, and leading mission statement processes. She is also involved in the supervisory board of a medium-sized plastics processing company.
In 2011, the board of the Buchkunst Foundation elected Schmidt-Friderichs as its chairman. At the end of 2015, it was announced that she would give up this post one and a half years before the regular end of the term of office. Her term of office ended on March 31, 2016, and Joachim Unseld was appointed her successor on the board of the Book Art Foundation. The head of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels thanked Schmidt-Friderichs for saving the Book Art Foundation twice during the award ceremony for the most beautiful books from all over the world at the Leipzig Book Fair on March 18, 2016.
In March 2018, the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels sent Schmidt-Friderichs to the German Literature Conference . In this function, she was a member of the Spokesperson's Council of the German Cultural Council until she was elected head of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels in June 2019.
On June 19, 2019, Schmidt-Friderichs was elected as the successor to Heinrich Riethmüller as head of the board elections of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels . She prevailed against Stefan Könemann in the vote of the member companies of the association . This makes her the second woman to head the Börsenverein after Dorothee Hess-Maier , who headed the association from 1989 to 1992. The term of office began on October 26, 2019 and lasts for 3 years. Since then, Schmidt-Friderichs has been a member of the supervisory board of BBG-Holding in the context of her chairwoman role.
Honors
On December 10, 2014, the Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate , Malu Dreyer, awarded Karin and Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs the State's Order of Merit for their commitment to beautiful books.
On January 25, 2018, Karin and Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs received the Antiquaria Prize for their publishing work with special mention of the quality philosophy, which not only refers to the books, but also includes the publisher's catalogs.
