Live and act

Roland Ulmer grew up in Heidelberg as the son of Professor Eugen Ulmer. He has two siblings, Barbara and Peter Ulmer, of whom only Peter and Roland Ulmer are left today. He did his Abitur in Heidelberg and then did an apprenticeship.

Roland Ulmer joined the Eugen Ulmer publishing house in 1960 after completing his training . Just two years later, following the death of his grandfather Richard Ulmer, he became the sole managing director. Roland Ulmer first adapted the organization of the publishing house to the modern circumstances. The publishing program was then gradually expanded. In addition to the specialist book, there was a successful and rapidly growing area of popular gardening books. At the end of the 1960s, these were supplemented by guides for the areas of aquaristics and terraristics as well as books on ornithology. During this time he covered almost all of these subject areas with the corresponding magazines.

Ulmer became a father for the first time on April 21, 1962. Constanze Ulmer-Eilfort is now a lawyer at the major law firm Baker & McKenzie. On October 23, 1963, his son Christoph Ulmer followed. Today he lives as a travel guide. Ulmer became a father for the last time on November 16, 1964. His third son Matthias Ulmer now runs the Eugen Ulmer publishing house and is a partner.

Roland Ulmer succeeded in turning a regional agricultural publisher into a national publisher addressing different target groups. The supply of the individual sectors of agriculture and horticulture with magazines, school and textbooks as well as comprehensive manuals was a particular concern of his. With the founding of the UTB Verlagsgesellschaft in 1970, Roland Ulmer and his colleagues created a model for the distribution of literature accompanying studies that is still highly modern today. In 2007 he handed over the management of the publishing house to his son Matthias Ulmer. Today Roland Ulmer has 9 grandchildren.

Publishing engagements

Roland Ulmer always saw the promotion of agricultural and horticultural sciences as an obligation. In addition to taking over numerous scientific journals, he always sought close contact with universities and lecturers at conferences and congresses of scientific societies. This high level of commitment was recognized by the University of Hohenheim in 1979 with the appointment of Roland Ulmer as an honorary senator. In addition to the important strategic decision in favor of a target group publisher and against a pure trade orientation, the management of Roland Ulmer also focused on the new media and the Internet.

With the establishment of a branch in France in 1993, a first step was taken towards the internationalization of the publishing concept. As a purely family company, economically independent and on stable feet, with competent employees and a strong market position, Roland Ulmer has now passed the management of the publishing house into the hands of the next generation after 46 years as managing director.

In 2007, on his 70th birthday, Roland Ulmer handed over sole management to his youngest son Matthias Ulmer. As a partner in the publishing house, he remains closely connected to the family business and accompanies its development by providing advice and passing on his experience.

Corporate culture and voluntary work

It was his goal to expand and improve the company established by the ancestors and to adapt it to future situations. In the long years of Roland Ulmer's management, the publishing house grew from 50 to 150 employees. The responsibility for this and the social obligation as an employer was always at least as important to him as the obligation to the shareholders. The establishment of the works council in 1970 and the many years of trusting cooperation with it are characteristic of Roland Ulmer's management culture. In addition to his commitment to the company and science, Roland Ulmer made a voluntary commitment to the book trade early on. For many years he worked first in the regional association, then in the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels as chairman of the publishers' committee, the assembly of representatives and finally as head of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels. He tirelessly fought for an improvement in the framework conditions for the book trade and a reform of the association structures.
