Gerhard Kurtze

Gerhard Kurtze (born July 21, 1932 in Hamburg ; died October 24, 2012 there ) was a German bookseller and head of the German book trade association .

Life

The bookseller Kurtze worked for the Hamburg wholesaler Wegner / Koehler & Volckmar , where he was promoted to managing partner. Since 1961 he has been involved in an honorary capacity in the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, among other things as chairman of the committee for the intermediate book trade from 1970 to 1976 and on the Board of Trustees of the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade from 1986 to 1998. From 1970 he was also a board member of the Börsenverein, initially until 1976 and then again from 1979 to 1998. From 1992 to 1998 he was its head. In 2000 he received honorary membership from the Börsenverein.

For his international commitment, he was the first German to be honored with the "Friend of Jerusalem" award in Israel in 1983, and in 2003 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit . The book cities of Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main also distinguished him, for example he received the plaque of honor from the city of Frankfurt am Main in 1996 , and the University of Leipzig awarded him an honorary doctorate.

In his spare time Kurtze was a rider in the Hamburg drag hunt club.
