history

The Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels is the successor organization to the Börsenverein der Deutschen Buchhandels , which was founded in Leipzig in 1825. Since its seat was in the Soviet occupation zone after the end of the Second World War, it was split off. In 1948 the Working Group of German Publishers and Booksellers Associations was founded in the American and British occupation zones and later renamed the Börsenverein Deutscher Verlager und Buchverkaufsverbände . In 1955, the association was given its current name as part of an amendment to the statutes. In 1972 personal membership was switched to institutional membership. In January 1991 the Leipzig Stock Exchange Association of German Booksellers was merged with the Stock Exchange Association of the German Book Trade.

Until the beginning of 2012, the association was located in Großer Hirschgraben 17-21 in Frankfurt am Main next to the Goethe House . Since February 2012, the association and its subsidiaries have had their headquarters at Braubachstrasse 16 in a building planned by the architect Otto Apel in 1956 , which had been converted with several buildings in the immediate vicinity by the architects Scheffler + Partner.

construction

The association consists of the federal association as well as six legally independent regional associations and the regional office of North Rhine-Westphalia, which is legally part of the federal association. The annual general meetings of the federal association (in June in Berlin) and the regional associations (each spring) are the highest organs. The decisions for the entire association are made by the regional council, in which the board of the federal association and the chairmen of the regional associations are represented equally. The Börsenverein unites - unique in the world - all three trading levels under one roof. The organ of the association is the stock exchange journal for the German book trade that was published for the first time nine years after the association was founded . Membership is reserved for book retailers, publishers, publishing representatives and similar industry-related bodies. The number of members was 4,376 at the end of 2019 (as of December 31, 2019). The association assigns the so-called traffic number to the members . The international location number (ILN) offers an opening for international markets . The association has a quota of numbers for bookshops.
