Traffic number

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The traffic number (VN) is a five-digit number for the unique identification of business partners in the book trade and publishing industry .

The traffic number system was introduced in 1963 with the aim of more efficient processing between the publisher and book trade. With the admission to the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels a traffic number is assigned by the member office.

There are number ranges for suppliers ( vendors ) and customers ( customers ). Accounts payable transaction numbers (in the range from 10,000 to 17,499) are given to suppliers, i.e. publishers , bar assortments and other intermediary booksellers . Accounts receivable traffic numbers (in the range from 20,000 to 59,999) are given to companies that primarily act as buyers, usually bookshops . Companies that act as both a supplier and a buyer (e.g. publishers' bookstores ) receive a number from both number ranges.

By clearly identifying a company, the traffic numbers simplify business relationships within the book trade. It is used in book trade (orders, deliveries, invoices, reminders) and is a prerequisite for clearing via the BAG .
