In 1946, the first book trade-specific course with around 40 participants took place at the University of Cologne . The school was run by the city of Cologne and the Rhenish-Westphalian Booksellers Association. A year later, the school moved into the school building at Goltsteinstrasse 195 in Cologne (dormitory with classrooms). In February 1952 the school moved to a building in Rodenkirchen near Cologne. On May 20, 1952, the school was taken over by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels in a small celebration during the 25th course . The future Federal President Johannes Rau was one of the participants in this 25th course .

In 1959, the board of the Börsenverein decided to move the school to Frankfurt-Seckbach . After two years of construction, the new building for the German School of Booksellers in Frankfurt am Main-Seckbach was inaugurated on August 16, 1962. The first course took place in Frankfurt in 1963. On January 3, 1972, the first course began at the Fachschule des Deutschen Buchhandels. The Seckbacher school complex with its formats was named Schools of the German Book Trade.

In January 1974, the textbook store built together with the new building of the technical school was opened, a facility that enabled realistic simulation of all processes occurring in the retail book trade . International interest was shown, among other things, in visits by foreign delegations (from Belgium, Bulgaria, the Netherlands and Japan) and in attending courses and seminars by participants from German-speaking countries.

In 1984 the first course for publishing clerks took place. In January 2003, the vocational training department of the Börsenverein moved to the bookselling school in Seckbach and the distance learning course was taken over by the Baden-Württemberg state association. In 2008, the first course for the new job description of digital and print media clerks took place.

From October 2009 the schools of the German book trade will operate under mediacampus frankfurt | the schools of the german book trade with a new logo and new CI. The school received the BuchMarkt Award in the “Newcomer of the Year” category for its creative concept .
