Arthur Christian Benedict Georgi (born February 9, 1902 in Schöneberg near Berlin ; † November 15, 1970 in Hamburg ) was a German publisher , partner of Paul Parey Verlag in Berlin and first chairman of the German Book Trade Association .

Arthur Georgi was born in his parents' apartment at Motzstrasse 22 (today number 46). His father was the publisher and owner of the Paul Parey Verlag Arthur Georgi (senior) . His mother was Bertha Flinsch. He was the oldest of three siblings. Since 1938 he had been married to Marilen Sauerbruch (* 1917), a daughter of the surgeon Ferdinand Sauerbruch . From this marriage there were three children.

Life and work

After attending the Joachimsthal Gymnasium , he studied economics, law and history at the universities in Berlin, Munich and Leipzig and obtained his doctorate in Leipzig in 1925. phil. After completing his studies, he completed specialist training in printing and publishing in Berlin and Leipzig. Long study trips took him to England and the United States. In 1927 he joined his father's company, Paul Parey Verlag, as an authorized signatory. In 1930 he became a partner and after the death of his father in 1945 co-owner of the publishing house. He continued to expand the publishing house until, towards the end of the Second World War, Allied bombing raids almost completely destroyed the publishing house and the entire inventory was lost in the Battle of Berlin . After the Second World War he played a key role in the rebuilding of the publishing house and in 1951, until his death in 1970, took over the management of the house in Hamburg, which had been newly founded three years earlier.

Arthur Georgi junior played a key role in the development of the German book trade. In the Third Reich he was a member of the Reich Association of German Magazine Publishers , chairman for scientific journals and magazines in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, fishing and nutrition, and head of the scientific and specialist publisher in the Fachschaft Verlag des Bundes Reich German Booksellers. From 1953 to 1956 he was the first chairman of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels . In this role he played a key role in the redesign of the Börsenverein and the expansion of the Frankfurt Book Fair in the post-war period . He achieved the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade as the highest honor and was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Publishers Union .

Honors

In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1957. He also received the Friedrich-Perthes-Medal of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels and in 1967 the Heinrich-Christian-Burckhardt-Medal of the Forestry Faculty of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen .
