Career

Werner E. Stichnote was the son of the Potsdam printer Eduard Stichnote († 1937) and his wife Anna. In 1937 he took over the company together with his brother Eberhard. In 1943 a publishing house was founded, in which the Potsdam prints were published (edited together with Edwin Redslob ). During the time of National Socialism , the publisher published a number of bibliophile works, e.g. B. to Arno Breker . Key note acquired the holdings of the Cranach press of exile Harry Graf Kessler stored in Weimar . After the end of the war, the publishing house was rebuilt in Potsdam, he received the license on February 7, 1947. Ulrich Riemerschmidt was the publishing director . In November 1950, Stichnote fled to the Federal Republic. The publishing house in Potsdam was continued under fiduciary management and made public property. In 1952, Stichnote founded the publishing house Stichnote GmbH in Darmstadt together with Gérard Du Ry van Beest Holle . In 1953 they both bought the rights to the series of Bürgers Taschenbücher from Alfons Bürger and founded the publishing house Das goldene Vlies . The publisher's program was taken over by Ullstein Verlag . In 1955, Stichnote worked for Ullstein Taschenbücher and is therefore one of the founders of Ullstein Verlag. Holle got out of the publishing house and worked in his own publishing house (see Holle Verlag ). From 1961, Stichnote was a member of the board of directors at Ullstein. In addition to his work at Ullstein, Stichnote continued his own publishing house, which was transferred to the Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt in 1969 . From 1968 to 1971 he was head of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels . From 1971 he was “Managing Director Production Management and Bibliophilia” at Ullstein for 2 years. From 1978 to 1987 a series of bibliophile anthologies with the imprint edition cue note was published by Ullstein / Propylänen Verlag , from 1982 the series Posie der Welt appeared in this context .

" However, a line of continuity can be seen in the eventful life of the publisher Werner E. Stichnote: It is the typographical tradition of the Potsdam publisher Eduard Stichnote, that is, the priority of book production over the publishing program."
