Charles Vernon Culver

Charles Vernon Culver (born September 6, 1830 in Logan , Ohio , †  January 10, 1909 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1867 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Culver attended preparatory schools and then studied at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware . He then moved to Reno , Pennsylvania, where he initially worked in trade. Soon he got into the oil business there on a large scale. He got rich and founded banks in 13 cities in the northeastern United States. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the 1864 congressional elections , Culver was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 20th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Amos Myers on March 4, 1865 . Until March 3, 1867 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . Since 1865, the work of Congress had been weighed down by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial. In 1865 the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified.

Charles Culver was involved in a major banking scandal while he was a congressman and jailed for corruption. After a long process, he was acquitted. His political career ended with these events. In the following years he continued to work in the oil industry. He died on January 10, 1909, while on business in Philadelphia.
