Arthur Georgi (born May 26, 1865 in Leipzig , † May 3, 1945 at Gut Neuhof , Mecklenburg ) was a German publisher and owner of the Paul Parey Verlag in Berlin .

His father was the first mayor of Leipzig, Otto Georgi . His mother Anna Gruner (1824–1925) was the daughter of a Leipzig wholesaler. Among his seven siblings, Rudolf Georgi was also a publisher and partner in Paul Parey Verlag. Arthur Georgi's first marriage was to Bertha Flinsch (* April 20, 1871, † October 24, 1928). This marriage resulted in two sons and a daughter. His eldest son Arthur Christian Benedict Georgi also joined Paul Parey Verlag as a partner. In his second marriage, Arthur Geori senior was married to Hertha von Zwehl (* March 16, 1889, † March 4, 1944). He and his sister Helene were shot by the Russians on May 3, 1945 in Neuhof near Zehna . His final resting place is in the south-west cemetery Stahnsdorf .

Life and work

After attending the Nicolai-Gymnasium in Leipzig, he did various apprenticeships in the bookselling commission business in Leipzig, in the assortment in Koblenz , the book printing in Stuttgart and in the Paul Parey publishing house. Long study trips took him to England, France and the United States. In 1891 he acquired the Eduard Besold Medical Publishing Bookstore in Erlangen , which he soon relocated to Leipzig and continued as the Arthur Georgi Medical Publishing Bookstore . Later he worked for Paul Parey Verlag. After the death of the owner Paul Parey on March 31, 1900, he took over the management of the publishing house at his request, which he expanded into the largest and most important nature book publisher in Germany until his death. In 1911 he took his brother Rudolf Georgi and his son Arthur Georgi in 1930 as a partner in Paul Parey Verlag. In addition to his work as a publisher, Arthur Georgi campaigned intensively for the interests of the German book trade and publishing industry. For many years he was chairman of the corporation of Berlin booksellers and the employers' association of German booksellers in the Berlin local group. He was also a member of the Literary Chamber of Experts for Prussia and the publishing committee of the Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft .

Honors

In recognition of his achievements, he received an honorary doctorate from the Agricultural University in Berlin (Dr. rer. Agr. Hc) and the University of Leipzig (Dr. med. Vet. Hc). He was also made an honorary citizen of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover .
