History Commission

A history commission is an institution for the organization of history politics .

History commissions often exist within socialist-oriented parties that seek orientation from the history of the labor movement and a party-specific interpretation. The PDS had a historical commission that was established in June 1990. When it was founded in 2007, the Left also set up a commission. The DKP knows history commissions within the individual structures. In the SPD there is a historical commission at the federal executive board and others at the state executive boards. After the unification of the associations of East and West in 1991, the Association of German Writers (VS) set up a history commission to review the history of the two associations. This has brought out the following publications:

  • The Biermann expatriation and the writers , Cologne 1994 and
  • Enemy loners , Berlin 1997.

In addition, there are history commissions when the understanding of history of different nations is to be brought closer together, for example by harmonizing historical images. In Germany, there are a number of textbook commissions working at the Georg Eckert Institute in Braunschweig, which seek to compare German textbooks with those of other countries for this purpose. In 1978 Werner Weidlich was chairman of the history commission of the Buchenwald camp working group .

Furthermore, there are initiatives for joint Israeli-Palestinian and Turkish-Armenian commissions that want to offer politicians amicable solutions despite different historical perspectives.
