The non-profit Kurt Wolff Foundation for the promotion of a diverse publishing and literary scene , Kurt Wolff Foundation for short , sees itself as representing the interests of independent German publishers. It is named after the German publisher Kurt Wolff and is based in the “ Haus des Buches ” in Leipzig . The foundation was established on October 17, 2000 by publishers and the then Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media , Michael Naumann . It is supported by funds from the German Book Trade Association , the Federal Government and the Free StateSaxony and the city of Leipzig. Among other things, she realizes her concerns by regularly awarding the Kurt Wolff Prize.

Kurt Wolff Prize

With the Kurt Wolff Prize, the foundation honors independent publishers based in Germany that have programs worth mentioning or make a special contribution to the diversity of literature. The main prize has been endowed with 35,000 euros since 2020, the sponsorship prize with 15,000 euros. The prizes are awarded annually at the Leipzig Book Fair . In 2010, Klaus Wagenbach was the first publisher to receive a lifetime achievement award.

Since 2006, the foundation has published the annual catalog Es geht um das Buch (It's About the Book) on the occasion of the Frankfurt Book Fair . Around 100 independent publishers present their programs there.
