The Peter Hammer Verlag is an independent book publisher based in Wuppertal .

history

Peter Hammer Verlag emerged in 1966 from Jugenddienst-Verlag , whose managing directors included Johannes Rau , who later became Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia and Federal President. The publishing house was founded with the aim of publishing left-wing political non-fiction and literature from the southern continents. The name Peter Hammer is the German translation of " Pierre Marteau ", a pseudonym that was used in the 17th century by authors of critical or disreputable writings to protect against sanctions by the authorities. Hermann Schulz managed the newly founded publishing house until 2001, when Monika Bilstein succeeded him . The publisher publishes around 25 new publications a year and is one of the publishers in Germany that work independently of a group.

program

One of the main focuses of the publishing program is literature from Africa and Latin America. The fiction is flanked by ethnological (Trickster Edition) and political non-fiction books on topics from the southern continents. The authors that the publisher made famous in Germany include Ernesto Cardenal , Eduardo Galeano , Chinua Achebe , Amadou Hampâté Bâ , Aniceti Kitereza and Ahmadou Kourouma .

Since the end of the 1980s, the picture and children's book program, which is now the publisher's segment with the highest turnover, has developed into a further program focus. Wolf Erlbruch , the now internationally renowned illustrator of the classic picture book “The little mole who wanted to know who hit his head (text: Werner Holzwarth ), has decisively shaped the face of the program.

Many of the publishers' authors and illustrators have been honored with prizes, including the German Youth Literature Prize , the Troisdorf Picture Book Prize , the Oldenburg Children's and Youth Book Prize , the Lynx Literature Prize , the Gustav Heinemann Peace Prize , the Pied Piper Prize , the Hans Christian Andersen Prize , the national and international prizes of the Book Art Foundation and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade , which went to Ernesto Cardenal and Chinua Achebe.
