Youth Service Publishing House

The Jugenddienst-Verlag was a book publisher founded in 1951 by the CDU politician and church lawyer Hermann Ehlers in Oldenburg . In 1953 Ehlers hired the then 22-year-old publishing bookseller and later Federal President Johannes Rau as managing director in order to professionalize the publishing work. A little later, Rau organized the relocation of the publisher to his hometown of Wuppertal by initially relocating all of the publisher's holdings and documents to his mother's apartment on Riescheider Strasse. Two years later the publishing house moved into the premises on Völklinger Straße in the Wuppertal district of Barmen . This made Johannes Rau the first to work full-time for the publishing house. Together with the first chairman of the publishing house, Oberkirchenrat Johannes Schlingensiepen , he expanded its program. The publisher's new series dealt with theological issues, politics, democracy, the Third Reich, Judaism, the relationship between faith and science, and the topic of sexuality. Due to his political work, Rau had to partially withdraw from the publishing business. Because of this, he hired the bookseller Hermann Schulz in October 1960 .

From 1956 to 1971, 96 issues appeared in the series The Conversation on predominantly theological topics, some of which, due to their popularity, saw several editions (see table below). The editorial team changed several times over the years, the editing at least until 1965 was in the hands of Johannes Schlingensiepen , partly in conjunction with Heinrich Giesen , Manfred Müller and Adam Weyer .

On July 18, 1966, the Jugenddienst-Verlag was merged with Peter Hammer Verlag , which is also his legal successor. However, long after 1966, at least until 1990, the Peter Hammer Verlag published books under the publisher's name Jugenddienst-Verlag. It can still be found under this name in address directories (as of 7/2013). After the reorganization in 1966, Rau stayed for another year until he was elected as the leader of the SPD parliamentary group in the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia , managing director of the publishing house, and then he withdrew completely from operational business.
