Karl Gerhard Steck (born April 28, 1908 in Markt Nordheim ; † July 6, 1983 in Bad Homburg in front of the height ) was a German Protestant pastor, member of the Confessing Church (BK) and professor for systematic theology .

Life

Steck studied Protestant theology in the late 1920s , including in Bonn with the systematist Karl Barth . After passing his exam, he completed his vicariate in Munich in 1932 with Bishop Hans Meiser as a theological consultant at the Oberkirchenrat . In 1936 he was appointed lecturer at the Preachers' Seminar of the Confessing Church in Frankfurt / Main . The fact that he was a theologian with his own profile is expressed in his remark that he had reservations about " doctrinal Barthians". In 1943 he was pastor in the Protestant parish of Sulzbach-Rosenberg .

In 1948, the Frankfurt rector Max Horkheimer suggested setting up a chair for Catholic and Protestant theology at the university. In 1952, for the first time, Steck became a full-time full professor for systematic theology at Frankfurt University, where he taught until 1964. In 1964 he went to Münster until his retirement in 1980. From 1980 to 1983 he nonetheless took on another teaching position as an emeritus.

In addition to his diverse publication activities, Steck was also one of the founders of the BK magazine “ The Voice of the Community ”, of which he has been one of the editors since 1949.
